ThisbookconsolidatesandreconcilesanumberofcompetingtheoreticalmodelsforthealignmentsofprenuclearglidesinMandarin,inlightofevidencefromslips-of-thetonguedataandexperimentalacoustics.ThebookstartsoutwithageneralexplorationofsyllabletheoriesandanoverviewofMandarinsyllablestructures,focusingonlongstandingproblemsandtheaspectsofphonologicaltheoriestowhichtheseproblemsarepertinent.Themethodologyforacousticmeasurements,resultsofstatisticanalyses,anddiscussionofacousticfindingsarethenrendered,followedbytwochaptersonslips-of-the-tonguedata.Whilenoneoftheformalframeworksadequatelyaccountsforourfindings,aconstraint-basedtheoryoffersbetterpotentialgiventhenon-unitarystructuresitpermits.Thisbookthusalsoaimstodemonstratehowpsycholinguisticandacousticfindingscanhelpresolvecertainapparentconflictsamongdifferentapproachesandhowsuchfindingscanbeincorporatedinapsycholinguisticmodelofspeechproductionplanning.Asubstantialamountoftheslips-of-the-tonguedataisprovidedtohelpvalidatethefindingsaswellastofacilitatefurtherstudybyotherresearchers.
